Field note 01 / Media relations
Build a pitch an editor can use.
A good pitch makes the story and its relevance clear before it asks for attention. Use this checklist before you hit send.
Find the actual angle
Write one sentence explaining what is new, who it affects and why it matters now. If that sentence needs a paragraph of context, refine the angle first. Match the idea to a journalist’s coverage rather than sending the same note to every desk.
Put the news up front
Use a specific subject line. In the opening, give the key fact and the local, sector or audience connection. Keep background below the point, not above it.
Make it easy to verify
Link to the original source of a figure, identify who can speak on the record and say what supporting material is available. Confirm that any image or quote you offer can actually be used.
Close with one useful next step
Offer an interview, a document, a demonstration or a concise answer to a likely question. Include a reachable contact and a clear deadline only when the deadline is real.
- Is the angle relevant to this recipient?
- Can every factual claim be checked?
- Are spelling, names, dates and links correct?
- Is the proposed next step easy to act on?
